FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Q:

How will the images be reproduced (size, type of print, etc)? Will the exhibited photographs be from the portfolio or will they be the artist's original format?

    A:

The portfolio will be printed digitally on 100% cotton rag or more traditional fiber based paper using archival pigment based inks. For black and white silver prints the digitally printed images meet or exceed any Silver based print in terms of detail and continuous tone. The exhibited photographs will be from the portfolio.

  • Q:

I assume the limited edition applies only to the portfolio and would not limit the work being available in its original edition. Can you tell me what kind of reproduction rights/copyrights would be transferred (or not)?

    A:

The limited edition applies only to the portfolio and the single curator's choice print. The Philadelphia Museum of Art would have the perpetual right to display the portfolio and curator's choice print and to reproduce the accepted works for educational and promotional purposes in both printed and electronic form. This agreement does not limit the artist's ability to produce the work. The copyright would remain with the artist.

  • Q:

Who is eligible to enter the competition?

    A:
The competition is open to everyone over the age of eighteen, regardless of nationality.

  • Q:

Is there any general theme of the competition? What do you visualize as the nature of the final product of your portfolio competition? Would you like it to be as diverse as possible? Black and white? Color? Would you prefer fine art or documentary?

    A:

We have left the categories open to be as diverse as possible. We leave it to you to select and submit what you consider your best work.

  • Q:

Can I switch/replace an image after I apply?

    A:

    No

  • Q:

Can I apply more than once?

    A:

    No

  • Q:

Who receives the proceeds from the sale of the portfolios?

    A:

Proceeds from the sale of the portfolios go to The Women's Committee of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Funds raised are used to benefit the Museum and its photography collection.

  • Q:

How many total images do you expect to select from how many artists? Will you be selecting entire portfolios or just a few images from multiple portfolios?

    A:

Seven images will be selected from seven different artists. This includes six images for the portfolio and one additional image to be chosen by the Peter Barberie, the Museum’s Brodsky Curator of Photographs.

  • Q:

I would like to enter the competition but have eight images in the portfolio I would like to submit (rather than the 10–15 that you ask for). May I submit the portfolio or is this a strict rule?

    A:

We will assemble the portfolio from six images selected from six different photographers. We require 10–15 images from each artist to be able to comprehend and appreciate the scope of your recent work. The images you enter can have any theme and do not need to be related to each other.

  • Q:

Will the Curator’s Choice photograph be exhibited and go into the permanent collection?

    A:

The limited-edition print selected by Peter Barberie will be exhibited at the same time as the work selected for the portfolio and will also become part of the Museum's permanent collection. It will be sold in a larger edition at a lower price than the portfolio selections.
